    • Holly Wood Motion to approve Minutes from Dec 10th Meeting as published on Website
      • Tara Tobin-Rabatin motion to edit the December minutes under Open Floor discussion to change where it states “Tara requested an elaboration of the following from last months minutes”.
      • Will Rabatin 2nd the motion for discussion
      • Discussion
        • Tara Tobin-Robatin Discussion, I am disputing the Dec meeting minutes because the inclusion topics listed in the minutes of race and ethnicity did not happen. They only discussion that was had in regards to the Father Daughter Dance was regarding gender and gender inclusion for all events at Harmony moving forward. It was also stated; change is coming to our school. Experts in this field are coming to train Teachers and Staff. I.e Instead of saying boys line up here and girls line up there…we will say, “If you like skateboards go here, if you like bicycles go there.” I also clearly said, “The meeting agenda prior to the PTA meeting December did not include the Gender Inclusion as a topic or point of discussion prior to the meeting.”
        • Principal Hackmiller Discussion – Inclusiveness was the main point. Staff training was regarding inclusivity. Statement above was taken out of context. Best practice is to choose other ways to line up besides gender and is only part of the training with staff. Gender inclusion was a lot of the discussion, because of the topic of the Father Daughter Dance. Inclusion is a school district initiative. This did not originate from PTA meeting. The Dance on the PTA agenda provided a great opportunity to address. The topic was not on the agenda specifically, but was part of principal discussion to request the renaming of the Father Daughter Dance. The invitation wording was the only change requested to ensure no one was “uninvited”
        • Principle Hackmiller offered to send out a community communication with an update regarding all inclusion events and training
      • Voting  –
        • In favor to revise minutes – 1 vote
        • Apposed – 4 votes
        • Abstained – 1 vote
      • Motioned to revised December meeting minutes. Denied
      • Holly Wood motioned to approve Dec 10 meeting minutes as published

Recording Secretary, Holly Wood

  • Approval of minutes from November 12, 2019 meeting
    • Approved following discussion and elaboration of event changes to be more inclusive. See open discussion below.

Open Floor Discussion

  • Tara requested an elaboration of the following statement from last month’s meeting after stating there has been confusion as to what all-inclusive means in reference to gender. Request that all events be more culturally responsive. Inclusive to all regardless of gender, race, ethnicity (11.12.19).
    • This statement was clarified to state that events such as our annual father/daughter dance and mother/son event be gender inclusive. That if a boy wishes to come to the dance with his mother or father figure he may. And, also that if a daughter wants to come to the mother/son event with her mother or father figure she may.
    • It was also repeated that historically no one has ever been turned away from either of these events for not being father/daughter or mother/son.

A Message from our Principal, Sue Hackmiller

  • MAP testing taking place now, rather than after winter break as it has been in years past.
    • This is wrapping up.

    • Once events are all complete, we will review with staff to see if they will continue for next year.
  • Raffle
    • Disney Tickets came in. We will raffle off 12 of them in 3 baskets with 4 each. Tickets went on sale $20 each at DWS and will be on sale until the 19th. Drawing will be held at 8am in the office on Dec. 20th via Facebook live.

  • Staff Events – First 2 are next week, registrations for those close this friday. No complaints about the new online payment. Much easier and less paperwork!
  • Special Education Recess Equipment – Is there anything we can buy specifically for them? Question came up about it and the equipment we tried to get last year from parents. Would like to see if we can do something from “educational enhancement” fund. Response was good and we will do something. Jessy to talk with Mariam Applegate, special education representative, to see what we could do. Also suggested by Tara to look into Minds In Motion program. Will gather information and present next month.
  • Book Drive / Classroom Book Donations – Reminder. Books being collected indefinitely. Collected books are for classroom libraries and book swap to be held after the new year.

  • Coupon Books – Asked if wanted to sell at DWS. Too much already going on. Fundraiser is closed.
  • Sensory Friendly Time at Events – It was brought to my attention that we should consider branching this out a bit. We have many students throughout the school that could benefit from the quieter time. Ms. Hackmiller reported that the school garden project is “pretty amazing” and thanked Kendra for her hard work. Loved that the kids were so involved on Earth Day! HES held 2 Kindergarten Orientation sessions today that were both successful in helping to introduce new parents to HES. There are currently 93 kindergarteners enrolled. This number could still rise and may mean a 5th K class will be needed next year. Wait and see. The current plan is for 4 each K, 1st, 2nd and 3rd grade classes and 5 each 4th and 5th grade classes. There are currently 2 LBD teacher openings. Taylor Grimm will be joining HES next year as our 2nd FT counselor. Mrs. Snow will be going to Goshen FT. MAP testing is complete, KPREP testing starts 5/15 through 5/24. No visitors or volunteers in the building during this time. Teachers will be moving classrooms June 3rd to get the grades more aligned. Help is needed!

Ms. Hackmiller announced that Kendra Wiegand is HES Volunteer of the Year. Congratulations all around to Kendra!

Jessy announced the need for volunteers for Field Day, 5th Grade Promotion Night and Moving Day. It was brought to Jessy’s attention an idea for alternative cleaning cloths over Clorox wipes. She received a quote from Norwex and per guidance of the board and Ms. Hackmiller will reach out to see if this idea is supported by the teachers. Stuart Ulferts worked on and received a $1000 donation from the MacLean Foundation for HES Chromebooks. This was approved and delivered the last week of April. Thank you Stuart! Open Positions for next year are Reflections and Yearbook. The 2019-20 Meeting schedule was presented (below), voted on. Motion to approve by Holly, seconded by Becky for approval. Jessy concluded her report with a BIG thank you to everyone for another absolutely amazing year. And she looks forward to continuing as President next year!

Harmony Elementary PTA Meeting Minutes

MINUTES OF THE REGULAR MEETING OF THE HARMONY ELEMENTARY PTA
March 12, 2019 – 9:00 AM – Harmony Elementary Cafeteria

Present: (Members, Directors, Officers, Chairpersons)
Dana Ludwigson
Dani Reich
Suzie Hackmiller
Diana Schaller
Shannon Barnett
Julie Buculos
Becky French
Ari Willey
Stuart Ulferts
Jessy Maggard
Kendra Wiegand
Brandy Schaefer

A Quorum of Directors being present, the meeting called to order at 9:02 AM.

MINUTES: Stuart Ulferts moved to dispense with reading the minutes and to approve minutes from the February meeting. Seconded and Approved.

Special Presentation:
Shannon Barnett explained her background and concern for the issue of school shootings and requested funding to bring Michelle Gray as a spokesperson for “SAFE in
Our Schools” program to HES. Several Board members commented that any action by HES PTA directed toward student safety ought to be coordinated with the other schools
and the BOE policy. Principal Hackmiller concurred. The discussion was continued to the next meeting.

Principal’s Message: Almost 1:1 Chromebook to 4th and 5th students. Three teachers are out for maternity leave. Full-time replacements have been hired for the affected
classes. “Jump Start” for Kindergarten will take place August 5-7 and registration packets are available.

Budget for 2019-2020: Event schedule for next-year’s fundraisers is due in June. Jessy will propose eliminating the golf scramble and talent show, since those activities have
not taken place for several years.

Kendra Weigand: Phase II Playground: the latest proposal was rejected by the BOE and the district director (of construction and improvements) has said that no further
improvements for HES playground equipment is countenanced for the next several fiscal cycles. This leaves about $15,000 that needs to be allocated for another project or
projects from this-year’s budget.

Ideas from the meeting attendees included:
-Waste footprint assessment to help reduce the environmental impact HES
Including lunchroom disposal, e.g., non-disposable utensils and trays.
-Purchase of “Program Books”, as well as individual volumes for the library.
-A general grant to HES educational enhancement.
-Purchase 38 Chromebooks to ensure every 4th and 5th grade student has one.
-Professional teacher development (in-house)
-A new electronic sign.
Jessy proposed circulating a survey to the HES staff to gather more ideas. She will report what staff requests at the next meeting.

Kendra also reported that the student garden project was approved and is on-track for April 21 completion.

FINANCIAL REPORT: the statement for 2018-2019 Harmony PTA Budget March, attached and incorporated to these minutes, was approved on a motion from Dani.

Old/New Business: Stuart discussed his experience volunteering for latest of the on-going staff appreciation luncheons that have been hosted by Becky French. Becky works hard on this challenging project and the staff seem to really appreciate it. This was confirmed by Ms. Hackmiller.

Jessy asked the board to consider some changes to Donuts with Dad and Muffins with Mom fundraisers. The events have lately exceeded the capacity of their respective venues and she suggested a multi-day “Pastries with Parents” event to help make it more manageable. She intends to speak with Linda, the HES dining specialist, and set further discussion for the next meeting.

Meeting adjourned at 10:31 AM

Approved,

Principal’s Report – Sue Hackmiller

  • MAP testing DRA winter assessments going on now until Feb. 8. Classes are using Chromebooks and iPads. Enough to handle one class at a time for testing.
  • Gateway to Arvin begins tomorrow — 4th grade GATES go to Arvin center. 5th grades go next week.
  • New hire: 4th grade — Seth Fowler. NOHS grad/UofL grad. We have a good on-boarding plan.
  • Three teachers set for family leave in March — three guest teachers lined up and are getting ready. All begin in March.
  • 32 tickets went out to Father/Daughter dance to free/reduced lunch students, thanks to PTA.

President’s Report –  Jessy Maggard

Fundraising Idea – guest Mega Vogt
Megan Vogt works for Louisville City FC. As a fundraiser they can issue an access code to groups of 20 or more for discounted tickets, and then for every ticket  sold Lou City FC donates $4 to the organization. Can be set up to benefit HES only or the entire North Oldham campus and school-specific.

Discussion — could offer this  twice — once in the spring and once in the fall. Much like the “dining out” fundraising. Could also be set up for continuous use of the code. Jessy will get with Megan to set some dates. No need for board approval because it falls under “family fun night” which has already been approved.

Box Tops Blitz
Jessy gave update on the additional box tops blitz. We had leftover free kids meal cards to Texas Roadhouse so they were used as incentive for the box tops.

Basketball Mania Concession — fundraiser option
Date for Basketball Mania is March 5. Waiting to find out if North Oldham boosters are doing the stand, if not we may be asked to do it. We have turned it in as a fundraiser for approval in case it comes our way. We need to find out if we are supposed to supply everything and we keep the profits, or if there is another set up.

Oldham County Community Scholarships
Jessy went to community meeting last week and inquired about the criteria for the HES sponsored OCC Scholarship.
Student must:
Have attended Harmony
Min. GPA 2.0
Member of NOHS PTSA

Jessy proposed that we delete the requirement of being a member of the PTSA. Most high school students are not members.
Kendra suggested to continue to include Liberty Elementary because there are still kids in high school who attended Liberty.
Motion made to remove the PTSA membership requirement. Discussion about the benefits of keeping that requirement.  Motion Approved.

Teacher events upcoming
Feb. 1 – Third grade, second grade.
Feb. 15 – K-2 grades. Even though it’s not a school day, Dani reported that it’s already half full but parents may not have realized no school day
March 1 – First grade
All money goes back to host grades.
Events must be held before Spring Break

Board Positions for 2019/2020
Diedra Weber will be VP of Programs
Becky French will be Treasurer
Still open:  Recording Secretary, Harvest Chair

Discussion about Donations Chair. Jessy felt that each activity took care of its own donations. Worked well when we were trying to get general sponsorships. It was a trial position, most agreed that we just have to be sure that we aren’t asking same places.

Motion to remove Donations Chair. Passed.

Crosswalk Safety
Jessy said it came up in the Oldham County Schools Community Council meeting, the safety of crossing 1793. Other schools had same concerns about student safety crossing roads in the high volume traffic. Superintendent Schultz recommended contacting Sen. Ernie Harris who is on the Transportation Committee for the Commonwealth of Kentucky. Discussion about letting parents know how to reach Sen. Harris, maybe put an article in PTA newsletter.

Discussion of requests to improve North campus. Ms. Hackmiller commented:

Sidewalk parallel to 1793 that connects to front porch of HES

Caution on 42 at back driveway.

Crosswalks to Longwood neighborhood

Also discussion of putting a light in at the high school on 1793 so sidewalks could be added to the Longwood side of the road to direct walkers to the light and crosswalk.

To address the issue of crossing guards (high school staff are doing this but not supposed to) then contact Oldham County Sheriff Steve Sparrow.

Agreement from all members that HES does a terrific job at running carpool line in the morning. Keeping it safe and keeping it moving.

Treasurer’s Report, Holly Wood
